Cameroon football association calls for investigation into Samuel Eto’o and Fecafoot

The Association of Amateur Football Clubs of Cameroon (ACFAC) has called for an investigation into the Cameroonian Football Federation (Fecafoot) and its president, Samuel Eto’o, following media reports alleging financial impropriety.

Former Barcelona and Inter Milan striker Eto’o has been accused of improperly receiving a payment from the Russian Football Federation in connection with a friendly between Cameroon and Russia in October 2023.

ACFAC claims the Russian Football Union (RFU) breached the terms of its agreement with Fecafoot by transferring about €567,000 ($654,000) to a bank account which, according to the association, was not owned by the Cameroonian federation.

The amateur clubs’ association has called for the allegations to be investigated and says it intends to pursue legal action.

ACFAC said it plans to file a lawsuit against Eto’o in Cameroon, while also preparing a separate legal complaint in Russia against the Russian Football Union.

The allegations have not been established in court, and it remains to be seen whether the proposed legal action will lead to a formal investigation or proceedings.

Eto’o, who has led Fecafoot since 2021, has previously faced scrutiny during his tenure as president of the federation.

Last month, he publicly backed Fifa president Gianni Infantino, saying he “hasn’t done anything wrong” despite pressure on the world governing body’s president over a controversial World Cup sell-off plan.

Eto’o is one of the most decorated African footballers of his generation, having won the Champions League with Barcelona and Inter Milan and four African Player of the Year awards.
