Guinea has received an initial response from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) following its appeal over a controversial issue in the final match of qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The Guinean Football Federation (FGF) lodged a formal complaint against Tanzania, claiming that one of their players wore an unauthorized number during the 1-0 victory on November 19, a match that decided the final qualification spot.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the FGF confirmed that CAF had acknowledged their appeal and assured that they would be kept informed on the matter’s progress.
However, the CAF response so far has been brief, merely stating that they had “taken note” of Guinea’s complaint.
Guinea has called for patience, urging the public to remain calm as CAF works through the details.
Some reports suggest that CAF may opt for a monetary penalty of €50,000 against Tanzania, rather than pursuing a more severe sanction like disqualification.
This decision, if confirmed, would be a significant setback for Guinea, who are already reeling from their recent disqualification from the U17 AFCON due to alleged age fraud—an accusation that the FGF continues to strongly deny, citing irregularities in how the case was handled.
The situation remains fluid, with all eyes on CAF’s next steps.
