Guinea’s Sports Minister, Kéamou Bogola Haba, has assured supporters that the national football team is not yet out of contention for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). His remarks come amid rising concerns following Guinea’s defeat to Tanzania in their final qualifying match.
“Guinea is not eliminated from AFCON 2025,” stated Haba confidently, referencing an official complaint lodged with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) regarding irregularities observed during the match, which ended in a 1-0 loss for Guinea.
The Basis of the Complaint
The Guinean Football Federation (FGF) has challenged an administrative oversight involving a Tanzanian player who reportedly wore a jersey numbered 26, while the official team sheet listed him as number 24.
This discrepancy, described as an “administrative error” by Guinea, is claimed to breach CAF regulations.
If the protest is upheld and Tanzania is found in violation, Guinea could potentially be awarded the match, which would secure their qualification for AFCON 2025.
“We have lodged a protest against Tanzania for irregularities observed.
The CAF texts are clear on this point. We have the right to hope for a favourable response,” said Haba, expressing optimism about the outcome.
Organizational Concerns
In addition to the protest, the sports minister criticized various elements surrounding the match’s organization, including a controversial refereeing performance and a sudden change to the kickoff time.
These factors, according to Haba, negatively impacted Guinea’s preparation and performance.
He further emphasized that the final decision will hinge on the report of the match commissioner, which is currently under CAF review.
Calls for Unity and Optimism
While acknowledging the uncertainty, Haba urged Guinean fans to remain hopeful and supportive of the national team.
“We must stay united and optimistic,” he added, reinforcing the importance of rallying behind the Syli National during this critical period.
If Guinea’s protest is successful, they would secure a place in the AFCON 2025 tournament, set to be hosted by Morocco.
Awaiting the Verdict
CAF’s verdict, expected in the coming days, will determine Guinea’s fate in the competition.
For now, the nation waits, hopeful that the appeal will grant them the opportunity to showcase their talent on Africa’s grandest football stage.
