Ghana face must-win South Korea clash at Women’s U20 World Cup

Ghana need victory against South Korea on Wednesday to keep their Women’s U20 World Cup campaign alive after losing their opening Group C match to Ecuador.

The Black Princesses have never progressed beyond the group stage at the tournament, but this year’s objective was to end that run and reach the next round. Their hopes, however, suffered an early setback when they were beaten by Ecuador on matchday one.

That result leaves Ghana with little room for error against South Korea, regarded as one of the strongest sides in the group. A second defeat would leave the Black Princesses in a highly difficult position, making three points essential if they are to remain in contention for qualification.

Ghana will need to be more decisive in front of goal and exert greater influence on the game than they did in their opening match. They must also begin with greater concentration, having been punished by the same slow start that contributed to their defeat by Ecuador.

South Korea also began the competition without a victory, drawing with France in their first match. The Asian side took the lead in that encounter before France levelled the score.

South Korea nevertheless showed resilience after conceding and used their tactical discipline to withstand France’s pressure. Their ability to remain organised and absorb attacks secured a valuable point, but they too cannot afford to lose if they are to stay in touch with the teams competing for a place in the second round.

The meeting therefore carries significant importance for both sides. Ghana are seeking to recover from their opening-day defeat and pursue a historic first qualification from the group stage, while South Korea are aiming to build on their draw with France and avoid being left behind.
