Farès Ghedjemis remains at Frosinone after failed summer transfer

Farès Ghedjemis will remain at Frosinone after his expected summer departure failed to materialise, with club president Maurizio Stirpe revealing that the Italian side’s majority shareholder insisted on keeping the Algerian international.

Ghedjemis had been strongly linked with a move away from Frosinone, with AS Monaco showing particularly strong interest in the winger. The transfer appeared close to completion before ultimately collapsing, leaving the Algerian to continue with the Italian club.

The situation became increasingly difficult during the summer after Ghedjemis missed several matches in an effort to force through his departure.

Stirpe has now explained the circumstances surrounding the failed transfer, saying Clara Vista, Frosinone’s majority shareholder, played a decisive role in the decision to retain the player.

Speaking at a press conference, Stirpe said: “If it had been up to me, I would have sold him. If he stayed, it’s because Clara Vista was determined to keep him. This is a relationship that needs to be rebuilt on a more solid foundation. We cannot afford what has happened in recent weeks.

It’s never pleasant to see someone refuse to play. Clara Vista has no prejudice in this regard. In the coming weeks, we would like to return to the team a player who has recovered from this ‘abandonment syndrome’ towards Frosinone, which, ultimately, did not materialize.”

Despite the breakdown in the relationship during the transfer period, Frosinone are now planning to hold talks with Ghedjemis over a new contract.

Stirpe confirmed that the club intends to discuss an extension and improve the player’s financial terms. Sporting director Renzo Castagnini has been given responsibility for reaching an agreement with Ghedjemis’ agent.

The Frosinone president also criticised the conduct of clubs that showed interest in the Algerian, with Monaco singled out over their approach during the negotiations.

“Regarding Ghedjemis, there is no contradiction between what I think and what Clara Vista thinks. There has been a complete lack of transparency on the part of certain clubs. They try to entice the player first before negotiating with the club. I don’t agree with this approach at all.

I spoke directly with Monaco’s management, but they didn’t honor what they had told us. Their official proposals were inadequate, so it was pointless to waste our time. There needs to be a minimum of institutional respect. Affection and love must be reciprocal, never one-sided.”

Stirpe also claimed that some of the clubs interested in Ghedjemis had already reached agreements with the player before approaching Frosinone.

“The clubs that approached him weren’t playing fair because they had already reached an agreement with him before contacting us. Ghedjemis’s contract terms needed to be renegotiated, and they will be. Sporting director Renzo Castagnini has been tasked with finalizing the agreement with his agent. The problem lies neither with the agent nor the young player, but with the clubs who are taking a very questionable approach to achieve their goals.”

Ghedjemis has since returned to action for Frosinone, making his first Serie A appearance of the season last Sunday.

The Algerian came off the bench in the victory over Venezia and immediately produced a convincing display.

His performance offers Frosinone an encouraging sign as the club attempts to move beyond the events of the summer and help Ghedjemis recover his best physical and mental condition.

For now, the winger remains at Frosinone, with the club preparing to reopen discussions over his contract while expecting him to rebuild his relationship with the team.
