Fawaaz Basadien’s positive mindset earns regular role at Mamelodi Sundowns

Mamelodi Sundowns defender Fawaaz Basadien says belief, consistency and a positive attitude helped him move beyond a difficult start at the club and establish himself in the team this season.

The left-back joined Sundowns from Stellenbosch FC more than a year ago but initially found opportunities limited at Chloorkop. Aubrey Modiba and Divine Lunga were ahead of him in the pecking order, leaving Basadien facing a period of patience as he waited for his chance.

He has now appeared in six matches this campaign and believes his approach to improving as a player helped him make the most of his opportunity when it arrived.

“Yeah, thank you. I think it’s a matter of consistency as well as just the belief I showed throughout my time since arriving here. It hasn’t been the start I wanted, but with my belief and my mindset, I think my positive mindset and positive attitude are what kept me going. Eventually, when given the chance, I had to step up and take that opportunity. I think I did that, and now it’s a matter of maintaining and even increasing that level of consistent performances,” said Basadien.

His return to regular action comes as Sundowns continue to operate under coach Miguel Cardoso, with the club’s never-say-die mentality once again on display during their 2-1 Betway Premiership victory over Golden Arrows at the weekend.

Basadien says that spirit has become an important part of the team’s identity and was evident in the way Sundowns secured the win.

The Brazilians now turn their attention to a home meeting with Siwelele at Loftus Stadium tonight. The visitors will be led by coach Godfrey Mosoetsa after Lehlohonolo Seema was sacked.

Basadien believes Sundowns must impose their own style on the match rather than allowing their opponents to dictate the contest. He also called on the club’s supporters to attend in large numbers, with the team having attracted strong crowds at Loftus Stadium.

Fans can expect more than football during the break, with Sundowns planning entertainment and activities to keep those inside the stadium engaged at half-time.

“Yeah, I think the supporters can expect a good half-time show and a lot of entertainment and activities to keep the fans engaged. I think it’s an experience for the fans to enjoy at half-time, allowing them to take their minds off the game and focus on a bit of entertainment for themselves.”

Basadien’s progress provides another example of how patience can be rewarded within the Sundowns squad. After beginning his time at the club behind Modiba and Lunga, the defender has taken his opportunity and is now focused on producing consistent performances while helping the team maintain its momentum.
