Mamelodi Sundowns became the first team to reach this season’s Carling Knockout Cup semi-finals after a 1-0 win over Golden Arrows at Loftus on Tuesday.
Iqraam Rayners scored the decisive goal, settling a closely contested quarter-final with about 20 minutes of regulation time remaining.
Sundowns had made the stronger start and controlled much of the early play, but Golden Arrows defended firmly and limited the hosts to few clear openings. Siyanda Ndlovu came closest to breaking the deadlock in the first half when his effort struck the crossbar.
Golden Arrows goalkeeper Dumsani Sibisi played a key role in keeping the match level. He produced an excellent save just before half-time to deny Mothobi Mvala, who had struck a powerful long-range effort towards goal.
Sibisi was tested again after the break and appeared to be in inspired form when he stopped Rayners from scoring with a left-footed shot.
The pressure eventually told when Antonio van Wyk delivered a precise cross into the area. Rayners met it with a glancing header, sending the ball into the net to give Mamelodi Sundowns the lead.
Golden Arrows were then forced to commit more players forward in search of an equaliser, but they struggled to create a clear chance against the home side’s defence.
Ricardo Goss was not seriously troubled as Sundowns managed the closing stages effectively. The hosts used their experience to protect their narrow advantage and secure their place in the final four.
