Brahim Hemdani tipped to replace Petković as Algeria head coach

The Algerian Football Federation is reportedly considering Brahim Hemdani as the next head coach of Algeria following the departure of Vladimir Petković.

According to reports, the situation surrounding the Fennecs’ vacant coaching position is beginning to take shape, with the 48-year-old emerging as the leading candidate to take charge of the senior national team.

Hemdani is said to have impressed officials at the Algerian Football Federation with his coaching credentials and, particularly, his recent work with the country’s Under-21 national team.

Former Algeria international Antar Yahia is also reportedly being lined up to join Hemdani’s technical team as assistant manager should the proposed appointment eventually be confirmed.

However, the Algerian Football Federation is understood to be taking a cautious approach before making a formal announcement. Rather than immediately handing Hemdani the position on a permanent basis, the federation is reportedly planning to assess him during the upcoming September international break.

The 48-year-old could therefore be given the opportunity to lead the Fennecs during the September training camp, with the federation expected to make a final decision on his long-term future after evaluating his work with the senior squad.

Such an arrangement would effectively serve as a trial period for Hemdani, allowing the Algerian football authorities to assess his methods, relationship with the players and ability to manage the pressure associated with one of Africa’s biggest national teams.

If the appointment is eventually confirmed, Hemdani would be forced to leave his current role as Algeria’s Under-21 national team coach only two months after taking up the position.

His potential promotion would nevertheless represent a major step in his coaching career, as he would take responsibility for guiding the Fennecs through their upcoming international commitments and future major tournaments.

The Algerian Football Federation is yet to officially confirm Petković’s successor, but all indications suggest that Hemdani has emerged as a serious contender for one of the most prestigious coaching jobs in African football.
