Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz steps down

Carlos Queiroz is close to extending his stay as head coach of the Black Stars after receiving strong backing from the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation.

The Portuguese tactician, who was appointed on a short-term contract ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, is expected to sign a new two-year agreement in the coming days as Ghana continues its rebuilding project under his guidance.

The move follows a comprehensive assessment of the Black Stars’ performance at the World Cup, where both the GFA and the Sports Ministry expressed satisfaction with the progress made during Queiroz’s brief tenure despite the team’s exit at the Round of 32 stage.

Although Ghana failed to progress beyond the knockout phase, football authorities believe the 73-year-old has brought renewed discipline, tactical organisation and a clearer playing philosophy to the national team.

Under the proposed deal, Queiroz’s immediate task will be to lead Ghana’s campaign in the qualifiers for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. The Black Stars have been placed in a group alongside Côte d’Ivoire, The Gambia and Somalia as they seek a return to the continental tournament.

The experienced coach will also be expected to guide Ghana’s pursuit of a fifth AFCON title, with the country’s last triumph coming more than four decades ago in 1982.

Queiroz’s extensive international experience, having previously managed national teams including Portugal, Iran, Egypt, Colombia, Qatar and South Africa, is believed to have played a key role in the decision to maintain continuity.

The GFA and the Sports Ministry are convinced that keeping the veteran coach in charge will provide stability as the Black Stars begin a new phase of rebuilding and development.

If the agreement is finalised, Queiroz will immediately shift focus to the AFCON qualifiers while working on strengthening the squad ahead of future international competitions.

An official confirmation is expected soon, with Ghana’s football authorities hoping the Portuguese trainer can help restore the Black Stars’ dominance on the continent and end the country’s long wait for another major trophy.
