Gallants consider move for free agent Happy Mashiane

Marumo Gallants are considering a move for former Kaizer Chiefs defender Happy Mashiane as they look to strengthen at left-back, with the 28-year-old currently training with ABC Motsepe League side Tembisa Destroyers.

Mashiane is a free agent after failing to secure a contract following his departure from Kaizer Chiefs at Naturena. He has been using training with Tembisa Destroyers, a club based in his hometown, to maintain his fitness while waiting for another professional opportunity.

Sources indicate that Gallants are assessing whether to pursue a deal for the left-back. The club are understood to be looking for added depth in that position, while Mashiane would be available without a transfer fee.

The potential move follows a failed pre-season trial at Stellenbosch FC. As previously reported by the Siya crew in July, Stellenbosch decided not to sign Mashiane after evaluating him during preparations for the campaign.

Gavin Hunt, who had previously worked with Mashiane at Kaizer Chiefs, said a lack of match fitness was the main reason behind the decision.

“Happy hasn’t played football for four or five years. It was difficult to take him. He is out of touch, you know. Hadn’t played in a long time, condition wasn’t good,” Hunt told media at the time.

Mashiane came through the development structures at Kaizer Chiefs and established himself as a left-back before his career lost momentum. He is understood to be using his time with Tembisa Destroyers to regain fitness and remain ready for a return to professional football.

A move to a PSL club could give him the opportunity to revive his career, which stalled after he was sent off in the 2021 CAF Champions League final.

Mashiane spent last season on loan at Siwelele but struggled to secure a regular place in Lehlohonolo Seema’s team. He made only a handful of appearances during that spell.

Gallants will now determine whether Mashiane has done enough work to restore his fitness levels before deciding whether to offer him a contract. The club’s interest remains at the consideration stage, with no agreement reported to have been reached.

The possible move would suit both parties: Gallants would add an experienced option at left-back without paying a transfer fee, while Mashiane would gain a route back into the professional game.
