Former Bafana Bafana striker Lars Veldwijk joins Indonesian side PSM Makassar

Former Bafana Bafana striker Lars Veldwijk has signed for Indonesian Super League club PSM Makassar after leaving Oman side Al-Nahda Club.

The 35-year-old forward has played across Europe and the Middle East during a well-travelled career, with his most notable spell coming at South Korean club Suwon FC. He scored 40 goals in 110 appearances for the club.

PSM Makassar confirmed Veldwijk’s arrival by announcing that he would wear the number seven shirt.

“Please welcome our number 7, Lars Veldwijk,” the club said.

“Lars becomes an addition to the strength on the front line of the Ramang Troops this season.

“Do your best, give everything, Ewako Lars.”

Veldwijk’s move to Indonesia follows what was described as a disappointing spell with Al-Nahda Club in Oman. He joins PSM Makassar with 388 appearances, 155 goals and 61 assists across his career, according to Transfermarkt.

Born in the Netherlands, Veldwijk began his senior career with Dutch club PEC Zwolle. He later represented a number of teams across different countries and earned seven international caps for Bafana Bafana.

The striker qualified to play for South Africa through his grandfather but was unable to establish himself as a regular in the national team.

His move to PSM Makassar also makes him the third South African player to feature in the Indonesian Super League. He follows Percy Tau and Njabulo Blom, although Blom did not make an appearance in the competition because of a serious injury.
