Florent Ibenge chosen by Mali Federation as next national team coach after selection process
The Malian Football Federation has reportedly selected experienced Congolese tactician Florent Ibenge to become the next head coach of the Mali national team following the departure of Belgian trainer Tom Saintfiet.
The Federation moved quickly to secure a new coach after Saintfiet stepped down from his position with the Eagles after a two-year spell in charge. In the aftermath of his exit, applications were opened as Mali intensified preparations for upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and future international assignments.
Reports from Mali indicate that the Federation received 28 applications for the vacant role, with the selection committee carefully reviewing each candidate based on technical competence, experience, leadership qualities and compatibility with the national team’s long-term vision.
Following the evaluation process, five coaches were shortlisted for the final phase of discussions. The list included Ibenge, former Mali coach Mohamed Magassouba, former Morocco boss Badou Zaki, and Portuguese tacticians António Conceição and Anthony Da Silva.
However, Ibenge has now emerged as the Federation’s preferred choice to lead the Eagles into a new era.
Widely regarded as one of Africa’s most accomplished managers, Ibenge built his reputation during a successful spell with the DR Congo national football team. He guided the Leopards to a third-place finish at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations and later reached the quarter-finals of the 2017 edition.
Known for his tactical discipline and calm leadership, the 64-year-old has also enjoyed significant success at club level. During his time with AS Vita Club, he won multiple domestic league titles and led the Congolese giants to the final of the 2014 CAF Champions League.
Ibenge later coached RS Berkane, where he won the CAF Confederation Cup and further enhanced his reputation as one of the continent’s elite tacticians.
He also managed Sudanese powerhouse Al Hilal Club before taking over Tanzanian side Azam FC in July 2025.
The Malian Federation believes Ibenge’s vast experience in African football and proven ability to manage high-pressure environments make him the ideal candidate to unlock the potential of Mali’s talented generation.
An official confirmation of his appointment is expected after the Federation concludes final administrative procedures with the Executive Committee.
