Patrick Vieira takes Senegal job with Africa Cup 2027 qualification first up

Patrick Vieira has been appointed Senegal head coach on a four-year contract, with his first major task being to restore confidence after a disappointing 2026 World Cup and guide the Lions to the Africa Cup of Nations 2027.

The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) confirmed the appointment on Tuesday, 18 August, bringing the Pape Thiaw era to an end. Vieira, who was born in Dakar and won the 1998 World Cup with France, takes charge of a national team for the first time.

His arrival follows a difficult World Cup campaign for Senegal. The Lions suffered two defeats in the group stage before being knocked out by Belgium in the last 32, losing 3-2 after extra time. Senegal had led 2-0 with only a few minutes remaining before Belgium staged a dramatic comeback.

The FSF subsequently dismissed Thiaw and his coaching staff, leaving Vieira with the immediate challenge of rebuilding belief in a squad that still contains considerable experience and several players competing at the highest level in European football.

The defeat by Belgium exposed weaknesses in Senegal’s ability to manage decisive moments. Vieira will need to establish a new sense of direction quickly, although he is not expected to start entirely from scratch.

A second priority will be to create a clear playing identity. Vieira’s club career has taken him to Manchester City, New York City, Nice, Crystal Palace, Strasbourg and Genoa, giving him extensive experience of working in different football environments. However, moving from club management to international football presents a different challenge.

He will have limited time with his players during international breaks and must therefore communicate his ideas quickly when the squad meets. The ability to impose his principles in short bursts of preparation will be central to the early part of his tenure.

Experience, leadership and the next generation

Vieira’s decisions over personnel are likely to attract close attention. Senegalese media have raised questions about the handling of the senior players and the organisation of the dressing room.

Captain Kalidou Koulibaly will be one of the key cases to monitor as Senegal considers how quickly to begin its generational transition. Idrissa Gana Gueye and several other established figures are also approaching an important stage in their international careers.

Vieira must balance continuity with renewal. Retaining experienced players could provide stability, while giving greater responsibility to younger members of the squad may help prepare Senegal for its next cycle. How he manages that balance will be one of the earliest indications of the direction of his reign.

There will be little time for a long adjustment period. Senegal’s attention must soon turn to qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations 2027. The Lions are in Group J alongside Mozambique, Sudan and Ethiopia, with the qualifying campaign due to begin during the September international window.

The immediate objective is straightforward: Senegal must secure qualification. But the FSF will expect more than simply reaching the tournament. Senegal remains one of Africa’s leading football nations and is expected to compete for major honours on the continent.

Vieira will also need to address the psychological impact of the World Cup. Senegal entered the tournament with high ambitions, but its campaign was undermined by a difficult group stage and ended in spectacular fashion against Belgium.

The new manager will be expected to turn that disappointment into the foundation for a fresh start. His reputation as a former elite player, together with his experience in European football, gives him authority. That standing, however, will have to be established quickly within the dressing room and backed up by results on the pitch.

Senegal won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2021, but the recent period has also brought intense pressure over results and controversy surrounding the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final. The FSF has presented Vieira’s appointment as another step in its ambition to build a high-level technical structure around the national team.

His mandate therefore begins with several unresolved issues: restoring confidence, defining a style of play, managing the change of generation, reshaping the dressing room and securing qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations 2027.

The first major examination of Vieira’s appointment will not come in four years. It starts in September, when he must show that the FSF’s decision can open a new chapter for the Lions of Teranga.
