Eric Garcia returns as World Cup winner to surprise Barcelona team-mates at training

Barcelona’s training session at the Joan Gamper Sports City on Thursday was lit up by the surprise appearance of World Cup‐winning defender Eric Garcia, who dropped in to greet his club colleagues before starting his holiday.

The 25-year-old centre-back, fresh from lifting the 2026 World Cup with Spain, visited the club’s facilities in Sant Joan Despi as Barca continued preparations for the new season, due to kick off in August.

Warm welcome for a world champion

Garcia, one of eight Barcelona players to emerge from the tournament as world champions, was given a rousing reception on the training pitch. Coaching staff and players congratulated him with embraces and applause in a relaxed, celebratory atmosphere.

The Catalan defender made his World Cup debut in dramatic fashion, coming on in the closing minutes of the final against Argentina – a match that sealed Spain’s global crown and Garcia’s first major title with the national team.

At Barcelona’s session, he was personally congratulated by new German head coach Hansi Flick, who took time out from the workout to acknowledge the centre-back’s achievement. Several first-team and academy players also made a point of greeting him, including Gerard Martin, Marc Casado, Hector Fort and teenage forward Rony Bardghji.

Their exchanges on the pitch underlined Garcia’s status in the dressing room and his close ties with the club, despite his immediate future now being dominated by post‐World Cup celebrations and a well‐earned break.

Flick turns to youth amid international absences

Beyond Garcia’s cameo, the training session itself highlighted the transitional phase Barcelona are navigating under Flick. With a large contingent of senior players still away or recovering after international duty, the German coach once again drew heavily on Barcelona Atletic and the Juvenil A youth ranks to fill out his squad.

Youngsters from the club’s famed academy system joined the session at the Sant Joan Despi complex, offering Flick another chance to assess emerging talent as he shapes his plans for the 2026‐27 campaign.

The use of B-team and youth players has become a feature of Barca’s pre-season work this summer, as the club manages a staggered return to full strength following the World Cup and other international commitments. Those training call-ups give academy players a valuable opportunity to impress the new manager and stake an early claim for competitive minutes once the season begins.
