The appointment of Andoni Goikoetxea, a 56-year-old Spaniard, as the new coach of Equatorial Guinea comes just three weeks before the crucial World Cup qualifier against Cape Verde. The former player of Athletic Bilbao and Atletico Madrid, who has also coached various Spanish clubs, takes over from Brazilian Gilson Paulo, whose contract expired last month.
Raymond Domenech, whose name was rumored, will not be taking the position. However, Domenech’s name is still in discussions for the coaching position at Montpellier, where the current coach, René Girard, is set to depart at the end of the season.
