Edouard Mendy, the Senegalese international goalkeeper for Al-Ahli, has been ruled out of Thursday’s highly anticipated Jeddah derby against Al-Ittihad due to a recurring muscle injury. Al-Ahli confirmed Mendy’s absence in a club statement, explaining that he is undergoing treatment and rehabilitation, delaying his return to competitive action.
After rejoining the squad last Friday in a 1-1 draw against Al-Okhdood, Mendy experienced a setback, leaving the match at halftime as a precautionary measure.
The club announced that the former Chelsea star is struggling with thigh pain and remains under the supervision of Al-Ahli’s medical team, though the exact duration of his recovery remains unspecified.
Al-Ahli’s official statement on social media platform X read, “Mendy is following a rehabilitation program with our medical staff and will return to training once fully recovered.”
The club also noted that, given Mendy’s experience and influence on the field, his absence will be a significant challenge as Al-Ahli looks to climb the Saudi Pro League standings.
In Mendy’s place, manager Matthias Jaissle is expected to rely on backup goalkeeper Abdulrahman Al-Sanbi, who has already stepped in for the Senegalese keeper on several occasions this season.
Al-Sanbi has shown promising form and will be called upon to maintain stability at the back during Mendy’s absence.
Mendy has recorded three clean sheets in eight matches so far this season, conceding seven goals and showcasing his strong defensive abilities when available.
Thursday’s derby clash between Al-Ahli and Al-Ittihad marks a critical fixture for Al-Ahli, currently positioned 8th in the league with 11 points.
With Al-Ittihad sitting in 2nd place with 21 points, a victory would provide Al-Ahli with an opportunity to close the gap on the top teams and push for a spot in continental competition next season.
The match also holds importance for the league’s title race; a win for Al-Ahli would benefit current league leaders Al-Hilal, who hold 24 points, allowing them to extend their lead at the top.
Al-Ahli fans are hopeful for Mendy’s swift recovery as the club continues to pursue a strong finish in the league.
However, with the experienced Al-Sanbi in goal, Jaissle’s squad will look to stay competitive and resilient in the upcoming matches.
The Jeddah derby, set to take place on October 31, is expected to be a fiercely contested encounter, as both teams aim to assert their dominance in the Saudi Pro League and maintain momentum in their respective campaigns.
For Al-Ahli, securing three points without Mendy would be both a boost to their league position and a statement of strength amid their star goalkeeper’s absence.
