Salim Magoola joins Durban City

Durban City have strengthened their squad ahead of the new season with the signing of experienced Ugandan goalkeeper Salim Magoola from KwaZulu-Natal rivals Richards Bay.

The shot-stopper joins City as a direct replacement for veteran goalkeeper Darren Keet, who announced last season that he would retire from professional football, leaving the club searching for a reliable figure between the posts.

Durban City found themselves with limited options in the goalkeeping department after both Keet and fellow goalkeeper Ayanda Mtshali confirmed their decisions to step away from the game at the end of the previous campaign.

The double retirement created an urgent need for reinforcements, and City have moved quickly to secure the services of Magoola, a goalkeeper who brings considerable experience from both domestic and international football.

The Ugandan international arrives at the club after an impressive spell with Richards Bay, where he established himself as one of the most dependable goalkeepers in the Betway Premiership.

Before joining Richards Bay in 2022, Magoola gained valuable experience in South African football with Pretoria Callies in the National First Division, where his performances helped build his reputation as a talented and consistent goalkeeper.

His progress over the years has seen him become a respected figure in the local game, with his shot-stopping ability, commanding presence and leadership qualities making him an attractive option for clubs looking for stability in goal.

Magoola’s performances last season reportedly attracted interest from Kaizer Chiefs, with the Soweto giants monitoring his situation during a period when they were assessing their goalkeeping options. However, despite the reported admiration, the interest did not develop into a formal offer.

Now, Durban City have won the race for his signature and will be hoping the Ugandan goalkeeper can play a key role as they prepare for a demanding season that includes domestic competition and continental football.

The arrival of Magoola is particularly important for City as they prepare for their CAF Confederation Cup campaign after securing qualification by winning the prestigious Nedbank Cup.

The club will be making their mark on the continental stage and will need experienced players capable of handling the pressure of African competition. Magoola’s international experience with Uganda and his knowledge of South African football are expected to be valuable assets.

His ability to organise the defence, communicate effectively with teammates and perform under pressure could prove crucial as Durban City aim to make a strong impression in the Confederation Cup.

For Magoola, the move represents another important chapter in his career and an opportunity to compete at a higher level after establishing himself as one of the leading goalkeepers in South African football.

Durban City will now hope that their latest acquisition can fill the void left by Keet and Mtshali while providing the consistency needed as the club looks to build on the success of their Nedbank Cup triumph.

With continental football on the horizon, Magoola’s experience and leadership could prove vital in helping the club navigate the challenges of competing both domestically and across Africa.
