Real Madrid’s perfect La Liga start overshadowed by Malaga referee row

Malaga manager Juanfran Fuentes launched a strong criticism of the refereeing after his side were beaten 4-0 by Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu, although he accepted that the home team had been the better side during the match.

Fuentes argued that the referee applied different standards when judging physical challenges, claiming Real Madrid were awarded fouls more readily than Malaga. His comments came after Real Madrid secured a third successive victory in La Liga.

“It’s as if, if you blow on Real Madrid players, a foul is given, but for us no foul is given unless there is blood,” Fuentes said during his post-match news conference.

The Malaga coach said his team had not received the same protection in challenges and suggested the referee had shown “greater ease” in blowing the whistle for Real Madrid whenever their players were involved in contact.

According to Fuentes, that difference in decision-making was a major source of frustration for his coaching staff after the final whistle. His criticism focused on the number of minor fouls awarded to Real Madrid compared with those given to Malaga.

Despite his anger, Fuentes did not deny Real Madrid’s superiority on the pitch. The hosts effectively settled the contest during the opening half-hour, building a commanding advantage before Malaga could establish a foothold in the game.

Jude Bellingham opened the scoring, before Malaga goalkeeper Alfonso Herrero was credited with an own goal. Kylian Mbappe then added Real Madrid’s third, putting the result beyond doubt well before the closing stages.

Arda Guler completed the scoring in stoppage time to give Real Madrid a four-goal victory and maintain their ideal start to the campaign. The result means the club have won all three of their opening La Liga matches.

Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho chose not to engage with the refereeing controversy when asked about Fuentes’ remarks after the match.

“It does not deserve a comment,” Mourinho replied briefly, bringing an end to questions about a possible dispute between the two managers following Real Madrid’s emphatic win.

The victory allowed Real Madrid to continue their perfect run, while Malaga were left to reflect on a heavy defeat and the officiating decisions that had become the main focus of their manager’s reaction.
