Senegal boss Patrick Vieira allays fears over Ismail Jakobs’ international future
Senegal head coach Patrick Vieira has moved to calm speculation surrounding Ismail Jakobs’ international future, insisting the left-back is expected to return to the Lions of Teranga squad for the next international break.
Jakobs was notably absent from Senegal’s squad for the opening two fixtures of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, as well as the friendly against Comoros, triggering speculation that the defender had decided to end his international career.
The 26-year-old’s absence raised questions about his relationship with the national team setup, with reports suggesting that he could be considering stepping away from international football.
However, Vieira has dismissed those suggestions, revealing that he has spoken directly with the player and expects him to be available for the next squad call-up.
Speaking in an interview with RTS1, the Senegal coach explained that a communication issue had contributed to the uncertainty surrounding Jakobs’ absence, while personal matters also played a role in the decision to allow him to remain with his club.
“There may have been a slight communication issue between the player and myself, contrary to what people on the outside might think. When communication isn’t clear, it leaves the door open to all sorts of comments,” Vieira said.
The coach confirmed that he had contacted Jakobs by telephone to discuss the situation, stressing that the defender’s absence was not an indication that he had decided to retire from international football.
“I spoke to him on the phone and we had a chat. There were a few personal issues. That is why we decided to make him available to his club,” he added.
Vieira further indicated that he had recently watched Jakobs in action against Barcelona and expressed confidence that the defender would be available for Senegal’s next international assignment.
“I recently saw him play against Barcelona. So there shouldn’t be any problems on that front for the next squad call-up,” the Senegal boss stated.
The comments are expected to ease concerns among Senegal supporters, who had been left uncertain about the future of the left-back following his absence from the previous international camp.
Jakobs remains an option for Senegal as the team continues its preparations for upcoming competitive fixtures, with Vieira’s latest remarks suggesting that the situation has been resolved through direct communication.
The Senegal coach will now hope to have the defender back in the squad for the next international break as the Lions of Teranga continue their quest for qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
For now, Vieira’s assurance has shifted attention away from speculation about Jakobs’ international future, with the focus returning to his potential return to the national team.
