Mamadou Koné signs contract extension with Lorient

FC Lorient have secured the long-term future of promising Malian striker Mamadou Koné after handing the 19-year-old a contract extension until June 2030, rewarding his impressive progress since arriving at the French club.

The new deal underlines the club’s confidence in Koné’s potential and their intention to continue nurturing his development in French football.

Koné joined Lorient in the summer of 2025 from the Africa Foot Academy in Mali and has steadily worked his way through the club’s development structure. His performances with the reserve team last season provided an early indication of his attacking qualities, with the teenager demonstrating an ability to find the back of the net consistently.

In 24 appearances in the National 1 competition with Lorient’s reserve side, the Malian forward scored nine goals, establishing himself as an effective attacking option and strengthening his case for promotion to the senior squad.

His progress has continued into the current campaign, with Koné making his Ligue 1 debut and registering six appearances for the first team. Despite his age and limited experience at the highest level of French football, he has already produced a memorable moment by scoring the winning goal in Lorient’s 1–0 victory over RC Lens at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis.

The decisive strike against Lens highlighted his ability to make an impact in important matches and offered a glimpse of the qualities that have encouraged Lorient to invest in his long-term future.

For a young striker adapting to the demands of top-flight football, gaining first-team opportunities while contributing directly to results represents an important step in his development. Koné will now be aiming to build on his early progress, improve his consistency and establish himself as a regular member of Lorient’s attacking setup.

The contract extension until June 2030 provides the teenager with greater security as he continues his development in Brittany. It also gives Lorient an opportunity to retain a promising forward whose performances at reserve-team level have translated into encouraging signs in Ligue 1.

Having made the transition from the Africa Foot Academy to professional football in France, Koné is now entering a crucial phase of his career. With his first top-flight goal already secured, the Malian striker will be eager to use the new deal as motivation to deliver more goals and continue his rise at Lorient.
