Burkina Faso edge Tanzania to open Women’s Africa Cup of Nations 2026 account

Burkina Faso secured a landmark 2-1 victory over Tanzania at Casa to claim their first win in the finals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations 2026.

Adele Naomie Kabre and Balkissa Sawadogo scored for Burkina Faso, who held on to take all three points in a match that saw Tanzania finish with 10 players.

Burkina Faso made the breakthrough shortly before half-time. A long ball was played beyond the Tanzanian defence and found Kabre, who finished the move to put the Burkinabe side in front in the 43rd minute.

The goal gave Burkina Faso a 1-0 lead at the interval, but the contest changed soon after the restart when Tanzania were reduced to 10 players. Hasnath Ubamba was shown a red card after committing a foul on the Burkina Faso goalkeeper.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, Tanzania continued to threaten and found a way back into the game. Their equaliser came in the 62nd minute after a free-kick struck the crossbar. Aisha Mnunka reacted to the rebound and converted to make it 1-1.

Burkina Faso responded by increasing the pressure as they looked to take advantage of the extra player. Their persistence eventually paid off when a well-worked team move created the opening for Sawadogo.

Sawadogo finished the collective attack to restore Burkina Faso’s lead and put the Etalons Dames 2-1 ahead. Tanzania were unable to find another equaliser, allowing Burkina Faso to celebrate a historic first victory in the final tournament.

The result gives Burkina Faso renewed confidence ahead of the final round of group matches. They will attempt to secure qualification for the next stage against South Africa on the third matchday.

Tanzania, meanwhile, will face Cote d’Ivoire in their final fixture as they seek to respond after suffering defeat despite Mnunka’s equaliser and a spirited performance with 10 players.
