Roma return to winning ways as Gasperini celebrates 300th Serie A victory

Roma ended a run without a win by beating Genoa 2-0 in Serie A, a result that also gave Gian Piero Gasperini his 300th victory in Italy’s top flight.

Santiago Castro opened the scoring in the 50th minute with an excellent finish from inside the penalty area before Emanuele Loli doubled Roma’s lead 18 minutes later.

The match was played in the seventh round of the league season and saw Roma recover after a difficult sequence of results. They had drawn 2-2 with Inter and 0-0 with Como before losing 4-3 to Real Madrid in the Champions League.

Gasperini’s milestone makes him only the fifth manager in Serie A history to reach 300 wins. He achieved the landmark in his 644th league match, having also recorded 154 draws and 190 defeats.

Teams managed by Gasperini have scored 1,072 goals and conceded 767 during his Serie A career.

Only four managers had previously reached the mark. Giovanni Trapattoni leads the list with 352 wins, followed by Massimiliano Allegri on 325, Luciano Spalletti on 306 and Nereo Rocco on 302.

Castro broke the deadlock five minutes after half-time, finding the net with a fine strike from inside the box. Loli then finished from inside the six-yard area to give Roma a two-goal advantage.

Genoa are managed by Daniele De Rossi, who is regarded as one of Roma’s legendary players.

The victory moved Roma up to 17 points and into second place in the Serie A table, although that position is temporary because Lazio were due to play Juventus later on Sunday.

Genoa remain on four points in 19th place, second from bottom.
