Rulani Mokwena, the head coach of Mamelodi Sundowns, has left the club with immediate effect following a mutual termination of his contract, the club announced on Wednesday.
According to various sources, Mokwena did not join the team for pre-season training on Monday, and Manqoba Mngqithi oversaw the first day of training instead.
Despite a successful season last year, tensions had been simmering between Mokwena and technical director Flemming Berg, leading to his departure.
Mokwena’s exit is surprising given his perceived backing from management and his achievements with the club.
Under his leadership, Sundowns set a new record for winning the league with 73 points and won the inaugural African Football League.
He also helped the club qualify for the FIFA Club World Cup, scheduled for 2025.
Mokwena’s departure marks the end of his second stint with Sundowns, having previously served as an assistant coach under Pitso Mosimane.
He was appointed sole head coach in 2022, leading the team to success before his relationship with Berg deteriorated.
