Bouna Sarr has completed a move to FC Metz on a free transfer, bringing the experienced right-back back to the club where he began his professional career. The 34-year-old defender joins Metz from free agency after leaving Bayern Munich and is now officially registered with the Ligue 1 side. His contract with Metz runs from 2026-02-02 to 2027-06-30.
The deal sees Metz secure a versatile defender with significant top-flight experience in both France and Germany, without paying a transfer fee. Sarr’s current market value is listed at €400k, underlining a low-cost but proven addition to Metz’s back line as they look to strengthen their squad depth in Ligue 1.
Born in Lyon and standing 1.78m tall, Sarr holds both Senegalese and French nationality and is primarily deployed as a right-back. His return to Metz marks the latest step in a career that has already taken him through several notable clubs. After progressing through Olympique Lyon’s youth system, he first joined FC Metz’s U19s, then moved up to FC Metz B and eventually the senior Metz team, where his early transfer value rose sharply as he established himself.
His performances in Lorraine earned him a move to Olympique Marseille in 2015, keeping him in Ligue 1 and exposing him to the upper reaches of French football. At Marseille, his market value peaked at around €9 million, reflecting his development into a reliable, attack-minded defender capable of playing at European level. In 2020 he secured a high-profile transfer to Bayern Munich, where he added Bundesliga and Champions League experience to his résumé, even as his market value gradually declined with age and reduced playing time.
By mid-2024 Sarr had left Bayern for free agency, and his value dropped from €1 million to €400k across his spell without a club. Despite that decline, Metz have opted to bet on his experience, familiarity with the club, and understanding of French football. His dual-national background also lends international pedigree to a Metz side aiming to balance youth with seasoned professionals.
Sarr’s career trajectory shows repeated returns to Metz at key stages: from youth to reserve to first team, and now back again at senior level. Having previously helped Metz during his early 20s, he now arrives as a veteran intended to stabilise the right side of defence and provide leadership in a league he knows well. The move could also offer him a platform to extend his playing career at the top level beyond his current deal, should performances match expectations.
With the contract now in place from 2026-02-02 to 2027-06-30, Sarr’s second spell at Metz offers both club and player a clear, short-term horizon. Metz gain an experienced Ligue 1 defender without a transfer outlay, while Sarr regains a competitive environment in which to reassert his value in French football.
