David Alaba linked with shock Hamburg move as Bundesliga strugglers seek rescue
Former Bayern Munich and Real Madrid defender David Alaba has emerged as a surprise transfer target for struggling Bundesliga side Hamburg, with the Austrian potentially in line for a return to German football.
Alaba, 34, is currently a free agent after leaving Real Madrid when his contract expired at the end of last season. His availability has sparked interest from Hamburg, who are looking to strengthen their squad after a disastrous start to the Bundesliga campaign.
According to Sport BILD, Hamburg are considering a move for the experienced defender as they attempt to shore up a defence that has already shown serious weaknesses this season.
Hamburg desperate for defensive reinforcements
Hamburg have endured a nightmare beginning to their Bundesliga campaign and currently occupy the bottom of the table.
The club have lost all three of their opening matches without scoring a single goal, while conceding 12 times. Their defensive struggles have intensified the need for reinforcements, with Alaba’s vast experience potentially offering a solution.
The Austrian spent more than a decade at Bayern Munich, establishing himself as one of Europe’s most decorated defenders before joining Real Madrid in 2021. He won multiple major trophies with both clubs, including the UEFA Champions League.
His versatility could also make him an attractive option for Hamburg. Alaba can operate at centre-back and left-back, while his leadership and experience at the highest level could provide valuable guidance to a team battling near the bottom of the Bundesliga.
Injury record raises concerns
However, any potential move comes with significant questions over Alaba’s physical condition.
Injuries have severely restricted his involvement in recent seasons. Since 2023, he has made only 47 appearances across all competitions, limiting his ability to maintain a consistent run of matches.
That record could make Hamburg cautious about committing significant financial resources to the veteran defender, particularly given their own constraints.
Alaba’s wage demands are also expected to be a major consideration. Although his free-agent status means Hamburg would not have to pay a transfer fee, putting together a deal for a player of his stature could still prove difficult.
