Bayern worried about Alphonso Davies’ mental state

This season has turned into a serious mental and physical test for Alphonso Davies, as the Bayern Munich left-back continues to be knocked back by injuries after his cruciate ligament comeback.

The repeated setbacks are now said to be leaving deeper psychological scars.

Davies most recently suffered another muscle injury in his left hamstring during the Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain, with reports in Germany describing it as a muscle bundle tear.

He will miss the rest of the season, and even his participation at the World Cup with Canada is now in doubt. Sporting director Christoph Freund admitted after the Wolfsburg game that the 25-year-old has “never really found a rhythm” since returning from his serious knee problem and is going through a “mentally difficult phase.”

The list of setbacks is long. After his cruciate ligament rupture with cartilage damage in March 2025, Davies needed around nine months of rehab before returning in December, only for more muscle issues to follow in February and again now on the other leg.

Coach Vincent Kompany stresses that while he trusts Davies will recover physically, the constant minor injuries are “mentally incredibly difficult.” Davies himself has previously spoken on YouTube about a “mental breakdown” during his knee rehab, describing how he broke down in tears after a shower. Bayern are determined to support him closely so he can regain stability in both body and mind.
