Bayern Munich weigh move for Bundesliga record-breaker Wael Mahya

Bayern Munich have opened discussions about a potential move for Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Wael Mahya, with the 17-year-old attracting interest from several leading European clubs.

The German champions have begun exploring the possibility of signing the teenager, who has Moroccan heritage. German newspaper Bild confirmed a report from Sky Sport Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg on Thursday that Bayern are monitoring Mahya.

Bayern’s sporting directors, Max Eberl and Christoph Freund, have contacted people close to the player to establish details of his contract and the conditions that would be required for a transfer.

According to the report, Bayern have already made the preparations needed to assess the deal. Their chances of completing the signing could increase if they decide to pursue the move more aggressively.

Mahya is no longer regarded simply as a promising youngster at Borussia Monchengladbach. He became the youngest player in the club’s history to score in the Bundesliga when he found the net against Bayern during the 2025-2026 season.

The midfielder was born on 31 December 2008 and holds both German and Moroccan nationality, according to the Bundesliga’s official website. He also became Borussia Monchengladbach’s youngest Bundesliga player when he made his debut in the competition before turning 17.

Mahya continues to develop

Mahya has continued to make progress during the current campaign. He has played in seven Bundesliga matches, scoring two goals and providing one assist, based on statistics published by the competition’s official website.

Bayern are not the only club tracking his development. Sky Sport Germany reports that Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen and RB Leipzig are also monitoring the teenager, alongside other European clubs.

A move during the winter transfer window currently appears unlikely. The situation could become clearer next summer, when the interested clubs may decide whether to make formal attempts to sign him.

Borussia Monchengladbach, meanwhile, are seeking to extend Mahya’s contract. His current agreement runs until 2028, but the growing attention from clubs in Germany and elsewhere has increased the pressure on the club to secure his future.
