Omar El Saai header lifts Al Ahly past Modern Sport in Egyptian Premier League

Al Ahly returned to winning ways in the Egyptian Premier League with a 1-0 victory over Modern Sport at Cairo International Stadium on Thursday.

The result moved Al Ahly to 20 points and second place in the table, following their 3-3 draw with El Qanah in their previous league match. Modern Sport remain sixth on 13 points.

Al Ahly made the quicker start and nearly opened the scoring when Ashraf Bencharki met a cross with a header, but Modern Sport goalkeeper Mostafa Makhlouf reacted well to keep out the effort.

The visitors’ resistance lasted 17 minutes. Ahmed Sayed Zizo delivered a cross into the area and Omar El Saai headed it into the net to give Al Ahly the lead.

Al Ahly had an opportunity to extend their advantage after Bencharki beat his marker with a successful dribble. However, the Morocco international was unable to find Zizo with the resulting pass.

Modern Sport were awarded a penalty in the 85th minute, giving them a chance to claim a point. Ali Fawzi stepped up to take the spot-kick, but Al Ahly goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir made the save.

Al Ahly continued to press in the closing stages and came close to adding a second when Sofiane Benjedida produced a surprise shot.

Modern Sport were unable to find an equaliser before the final whistle, allowing Al Ahly to secure a narrow victory and end their wait for a league win.
