Barcelona returned to winning ways in the Champions League with a 3-0 victory over Aston Villa on Tuesday, but the performance raised questions about whether Hansi Flick can use the same approach against Atletico de Madrid.
The match was played at Camp Nou in the fourth round of the league phase, taking Barcelona to nine points and into second place. They had lost 4-2 to Paris Saint-Germain in their previous fixture.
Pressing brings rewards
Flick instructed Barcelona to press Aston Villa high from the opening whistle. Raphinha, Lamine Yamal, Gordon and Fermin Lopez led the pressure, with Pedri and Rodri also pushing forward to help close down the visitors.
The tactic immediately created problems for Aston Villa’s defence. A mistake in the opening stages allowed Lamine Yamal to score Barcelona’s first goal.
Aston Villa continued to make errors, although they became less frequent after the interval as manager Unai Emery attempted to reorganise his side. Barcelona repeatedly forced the visitors into rushed clearances or won the ball back by restricting the space around their penalty area.
The pressure also created a series of opportunities for Barcelona, who were able to recover possession high up the pitch and maintain control for long periods.
Defensive vulnerability exposed
However, the aggressive strategy also left Barcelona open at the back. Aston Villa found space behind the advancing home players and created four clear chances in the first half through counter-attacks.
Those moves took the English side into dangerous positions against goalkeeper Joan Garcia, whose performance proved crucial to the result. He was awarded a rating of 8 out of 10 by Sofascore.
Aston Villa’s opportunities became less frequent in the second half, but they remained threatening and hit the post with a chance that could have changed the match.
Joan Garcia ultimately kept a clean sheet, the first time Barcelona have prevented their opponents from scoring in the Champions League after 18 matches without doing so.
Atletico challenge awaits
Barcelona now face a major test on Sunday when they travel to Wanda Metropolitano to play Atletico de Madrid in La Liga.
They lead the table with 30 points, while Atletico de Madrid are second on 28 and Real Madrid third on 27. A defeat would cost Barcelona top spot and could also leave them level with Real Madrid at the end of the round.
The victory over Aston Villa therefore serves as a warning for Flick. Repeating the same high-risk approach against Diego Simeone’s side could put Barcelona’s league position in danger.
Fast counter-attacks are a defining feature of Simeone’s Atletico de Madrid, particularly in major fixtures, even when the Argentine occasionally adopts a different approach in other matches.
Atletico have several players capable of exploiting any space left by Barcelona, including Giuliano Simeone, Julian Alvarez, Marcos Llorente, Alejandro Baena, Pablo Barrios and Sorloth. Ademola Lookman and Lee Kang-in are also expected to be part of the squad.
Many of those players combine speed with technical quality, creating a significant threat if Atletico are allowed to break forward as Aston Villa did.
The question for Flick is whether to adjust his approach at Wanda Metropolitano or trust the same plan that secured victory against Aston Villa.
