Manchester United supporters threw tennis balls on to the pitch during their Champions League match against Roma at Old Trafford, protesting against the club’s management and owners before the home side completed a remarkable 3-2 comeback.
The demonstration came as Manchester United faced mounting pressure after failing to win any of their previous nine matches in all competitions. That poor run had increased scrutiny on manager Michael Carrick, whose position was reported to be under threat.
The protest took place during a difficult opening spell for the hosts. Manchester United were 2-0 down inside the first 17 minutes, before a group of supporters in the Stretford End began throwing tennis balls on to the pitch in the 21st minute.
Play was briefly interrupted as the players removed the balls before the match resumed.
According to Sky Sports, the protest had been organised in advance and promoted on social media. Further demonstrations took place around the stadium, reflecting growing anger among supporters over both the team’s results and rising ticket prices.
Although the disruption caused only a short delay, its timing underlined the strength of feeling inside Old Trafford, particularly with Manchester United struggling badly against Roma in the early stages.
The home side produced a dramatic response after half-time, turning a two-goal deficit into victory. Bruno Fernandes reduced the arrears from the penalty spot in the 58th minute, before Matheus Cunha equalised seven minutes from time.
The Brazilian then completed the turnaround only three minutes later, scoring again in the 86th minute to secure a 3-2 win and finish with both of Manchester United’s goals in the second half.
The victory came in the fourth round of the league phase of the Champions League and ended the run of nine matches without a win in all competitions.
Manchester United’s next listed Premier League fixture is away to Aston Villa on 08 November 2026. Roma are scheduled to face Sassuolo in Serie A on 07 November 2026.
