Barcelona face Frenkie de Jong decision as academy push grows under Hansi Flick

Frenkie de Jong’s return from the knee injury he suffered during the World Cup has reopened debate within Barcelona over his long-term role, despite the midfielder retaining the confidence of manager Hansi Flick.

According to Sport, Flick continues to value the Netherlands international, but there is a growing belief within the club that greater emphasis should be placed on players developed through Barcelona’s academy.

The relationship between De Jong and Barcelona was badly affected by the injury and the way his recovery was handled. Although tensions eased over the following months, his return to action has brought renewed uncertainty over the position he now occupies in the squad.

The midfielder arrived back from international duty injured and chose conservative treatment rather than surgery. That approach was successful, although he did not make his first appearance until late October. During the difficult period in August, he was also temporarily removed as captain, with the armband given to Raphinha.

De Jong later asked to speak to the club’s media channels to explain his position and stress that his relationship with Flick remained excellent. However, Barcelona were unhappy with what they regarded as the risk the player had taken with his knee, and made their concerns clear during that month.

Flick has dealt with the situation gradually. Last Sunday, he introduced De Jong for a short period in the important match against Real Madrid, believing the midfielder’s strength could help Barcelona during the closing stages. The German has consistently maintained that he will make decisions based on what he considers best for the team.

De Jong was used in a more advanced role against Real Madrid but repeatedly dropped deep to receive the ball, reflecting his greater comfort in his usual position. In training, Flick has also tested him as a centre-back in recent weeks because of mounting defensive absences.

That experimentation suggested De Jong could be asked to fill different gaps in the team rather than return to the role he held last season. His appearance in El Clasico, however, has left some questions over how prominent his place will be.

Internally, Barcelona believe Pedri and Rodri should form the preferred central midfield partnership. They also want academy players, particularly Marc Bernal and Gavi, to receive priority when the squad is rotated, with Bernal viewed as a significant project for the club.

Barcelona’s management would be willing to give Bernal minutes even if that reduced De Jong’s opportunities. The final decision, though, belongs to Flick, who will determine over the coming weeks whether the Dutchman is given another sustained opportunity.

The next two months are expected to be decisive. Limited playing time could make a departure possible, while a return to a starting role would effectively reset De Jong’s situation.

Many inside Barcelona would not oppose his exit, for both sporting and financial reasons. The greater uncertainty is whether De Jong himself would be prepared to consider offers. That is likely to depend first on whether he becomes convinced his opportunities at Barcelona are limited.

The issue comes into focus as Barcelona’s La Liga schedule lists a meeting with Deportivo Alaves on 31 October 2026.
