Barcelona are prepared to let Atletico Madrid’s supporters shape the next stage of the Julian Alvarez transfer saga

Julian Alvarez returns to the Atletico de Madrid squad on Saturday in the most difficult circumstances yet, with some of the club’s supporters having made the Argentina forward one of the players they no longer want at the club.

According to Spanish newspaper Sport, Alvarez is not expected to start against Villarreal. However, the main focus is unlikely to be the starting XI. Instead, attention will centre on the moment he leaves the bench to warm up at the Metropolitano – and on how the stadium responds.

Sport reported that the noise, or indeed the silence, generated by the supporters could carry greater significance than the result of the La Liga match itself.

Barcelona do not intend to make a move in the afternoon and believe there is no need to force the issue. The Catalan club’s position is based on the belief that time is working in its favour, after Alvarez has already made his preference clear both privately and publicly.

Barca also does not feel the need to put pressure on any of the parties involved. The player’s representatives and wider camp are continuing to work in his interests, with the plan centred on patience, avoiding public discussion of the transfer and remaining ready to act if an opportunity emerges during the final days of the transfer window.

Atletico, meanwhile, is sticking to its own strategy. If Alvarez has to be sold, the Madrid club does not want that move to be to Barcelona.

The club considers Arsenal an acceptable destination for the forward, both in terms of the potential fee and the location. That option, however, directly conflicts with Alvarez’s wishes, because he is not considering a return to the Premier League.

Without the player’s approval, a transfer of this scale cannot be completed, and that remains the central obstacle in the dispute.

Metropolitano reaction could prove decisive

Those circumstances mean Saturday evening’s fixture is being viewed as much more than an ordinary league game. In practical terms, Alvarez’s reception when he warms up with the substitutes could act as a vote on his future.

If the Metropolitano responds with clear and sustained rejection, the atmosphere around the player could become even more difficult to manage on a daily basis. It would also force Atletico to confront an uncomfortable question: “Does it make sense to keep a player when part of the stadium’s supporters have already decided they do not want him?”

Sport said football can quickly forget individual signals, but tense atmospheres tend to leave a lasting impression.

That is precisely why the player’s camp believes the match could work in its favour. A hostile reception would strengthen the argument put forward by Alvarez’s representatives in recent weeks: that the situation has become unsustainable, that continuing to work under Diego Simeone is not in the best interests of either the player or the team, and that leaving would be the least painful solution for everyone involved.

For now, Barcelona’s approach is to wait rather than intervene. The club believes the combination of Alvarez’s position, Atletico’s internal pressure and any reaction from the supporters could eventually open the door to a deal.
