Kevin De Bruyne makes instant Napoli impact as he targets injury-free season

Kevin De Bruyne made a decisive impact from the bench as Napoli began their Serie A campaign with a 2-0 win over Genoa, scoring one goal and creating another before saying he hopes to enjoy a season without injury.

The Belgium international entered the match in the second half and quickly helped change the contest. He opened the scoring for Napoli before setting up Antonio Vergara to complete the victory, giving Massimiliano Allegri’s side a strong start and a clean sheet.

“It was a difficult match, especially at the beginning. After 20 or 25 minutes we started to control the game, and in the second half we pressed well,” De Bruyne told Sky Sport.

“We scored two goals in the end, and it is great to start with a win and keep a clean sheet.”

De Bruyne’s encouraging performance came after a difficult period in his first season with Napoli. The Belgian midfielder underwent surgery and spent five months out of action before returning in March, when the rest of the squad was already at peak fitness.

“Last season was difficult. Having surgery and being out for five months was not easy,” he said.

“I think I started well last season, but it is very difficult to return in March when everyone else is at their best.”

De Bruyne also said he had only recently returned to Napoli’s squad after being away because of the World Cup.

“I have only been back with the team for two weeks because of the World Cup, and I think I am performing well. I am trying to help the team and I hope I can have a season without injuries and enjoy football.”

The 34-year-old left Manchester City as a free agent in the summer of 2025 after the club decided not to renew his contract, with his injury record a factor in that decision. He subsequently joined Napoli.

“I have been playing football for 18 years, and certainly the last three years have been difficult. I have undergone two surgeries,” De Bruyne added.

The midfielder spent much of his Manchester City career as one of the Premier League’s most influential players, but injuries disrupted his final seasons at the club. His latest appearance for Napoli offered an early sign that he may be ready to make a sustained contribution under Allegri.

“I am trying to work hard and help the team, and they will help me too,” he said.

“Last season we finished second, which was not bad, but we hope to perform better this time.”

Napoli’s next Serie A fixture is at home to Como on Sunday. Como began the season with a 1-1 draw against Udinese.
