Arsenal control Champions League league-phase start as Napoli withstand early pressure

Arsenal enjoyed the greater share of possession and created the clearest opportunity during the opening stages of their Champions League league-phase meeting with Napoli, but the score remained 0-0 after 15 minutes.

Napoli began by trying to play out from the back under pressure, while Arsenal established control in the defensive half of the Italian side. The visitors repeatedly worked the ball through midfield, with Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka combining again to create space for an unmarked teammate inside the penalty area.

Arsenal’s first notable opening came when Saka collected the ball in the middle of the box and struck a left-footed shot towards goal. Alex Meret reacted well to save and prevent what had looked a certain goal.

Arsenal also threatened from the right, where Ben White delivered a cross into the area. Meret dealt with the danger, claiming the ball before the attack could develop.

Napoli offered a response from distance. Matteo Politano tested David Raya with a powerful left-footed effort from outside the penalty area, but the Arsenal goalkeeper held it confidently. Kevin De Bruyne then tried his luck with another fierce long-range strike, only for Raya to make a second assured save.

The match settled into a relatively even rhythm after that early exchange, although Arsenal continued to look the more comfortable side in possession. Napoli worked to escape the pressure from their defensive zone, while their players maintained a disciplined shape whenever Arsenal advanced.

Rice was central to Arsenal’s attacking play. He sent a cross from the right towards the Napoli penalty area, but Rafael Marin cleared the ball away from danger. The Arsenal midfielder then took responsibility for two corners from the left.

The first delivery was placed into the area but finished safely in Meret’s hands. The second was headed or cleared away by the Napoli defence and resulted in another corner. The corner count stood at two for Arsenal and none for Napoli.

There were several stoppages for fouls during the opening period. Eberechi Eze was penalised in Napoli’s defensive half following an intervention involving De Bruyne, with Arsenal players appealing for a yellow card. Eze was later awarded a free-kick after being fouled in the same area.

Giovanni Di Lorenzo was also penalised in Napoli’s defensive half after bringing down Eze.

Napoli’s most promising move from the right ended without a shot when De Bruyne sent a low cross into the penalty area. The ball travelled comfortably into Raya’s hands.

Arsenal continued to probe, but Napoli’s defensive positioning limited the available space. At the end of the opening 15 minutes, the sides remained level, with Arsenal controlling much of the ball and Napoli relying on defensive organisation and efforts from distance.
