Arbeloa shuts down Kylian Mbappe ‘fourth striker’ claim after Oviedo win
Álvaro Arbeloa has firmly rejected claims made by Kylian Mbappé that he was labelled as Real Madrid’s “fourth striker,” insisting the forward may have misinterpreted the situation.
The controversy emerged after Madrid’s 2-0 victory over Real Oviedo at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, where Mbappé was introduced from the bench in place of Gonzalo García.
Despite contributing an assist, the France international expressed frustration over his limited role, suggesting he had been relegated in the attacking pecking order.
“I’m very well, 100%. I haven’t played because I’m the manager’s fourth-choice striker. I accept it and play the time they give me. I provided an assist for Jude, and you always have to be positive.”
Arbeloa, however, was quick to distance himself from the remarks, making it clear that no such label had been assigned. “It never happened that I told Mbappé he’s our fourth striker.
Maybe he misunderstood. I’ve never said it,” he told reporters, addressing the growing speculation surrounding squad hierarchy.
The Madrid boss used the moment to reinforce his authority, underlining that selection decisions remain solely his responsibility regardless of a player’s profile or reputation.
“As long as I’m in this chair, I am the ONE who decides who plays and who doesn’t,” he continued.
“I do not care what their names are. If they like it, fine, and if not, they can wait for the next one.”
The exchange highlights early tension in Madrid’s star-studded attack, where competition for places has intensified following Mbappé’s high-profile arrival.
While the 26-year-old’s impact off the bench demonstrated his quality, questions over his role could linger if minutes remain limited.
