Araujo puts Liverpool permanent transfer talks on hold despite impressive start

Ronald Araujo says it is too soon to discuss whether his loan move to Liverpool will become permanent, despite making an immediate impact at Anfield.

The Uruguay international has quickly become Liverpool’s first-choice right-back, even though he would prefer to play in central defence. He has made 10 appearances since joining the club and appears to have adapted well to the demands of English football.

Liverpool have an option to sign the former Barcelona captain for £47m, but the club must decide whether that investment is justified in the long term, with Araujo turning 28 in March.

“I’m really happy to be here, my family are also very happy but it’s a bit early to be talking about these things,” Araujo said before Tuesday’s Champions League meeting with Villarreal.

The defender believes his time at Barcelona prepared him for the demands of playing for one of Europe’s biggest clubs. He said the pressure and responsibility he experienced there had helped ease his transition to Liverpool.

“Coming to Liverpool, it’s not easy. There are those demands, that responsibility. Personally I’d already experienced that in Barcelona,” he explained.

Araujo said players respond differently to the challenge of joining a major club, but he had been clear from the beginning that he needed to give everything to his new team.

“It depends on the personality of each player and how they face that challenge. I knew it was a new challenge coming to the Premier League but from the first moment I arrived I had no doubts I had to give everything here. And that’s how I live it,” he said.

He added that the expectations placed on players at elite clubs were an unavoidable part of the role and something they had to accept.

“It’s not easy to be in big sides, but that’s what we came to do. That’s the work we have to do.”

Liverpool have won both of their opening Champions League league-phase games, beating Atletico Madrid and LASK. They are fifth in the standings ahead of Villarreal’s visit to Anfield on Tuesday.

Araujo’s strong start has given Liverpool a dependable option at right-back, while his long-term future remains unresolved. The club’s decision will come after the current loan arrangement, with the £47m option providing a route to a permanent deal but no indication yet that an agreement is close.
