Mamelodi Sundowns have completed the signing of national under-20 captain Lazola Maku, adding the midfielder to an already competitive squad.
Maku departed Siwelele FC at the end of last season in a decision that came as a surprise given his progress at international youth level. He subsequently travelled to Austria for a trial as he looked for a new club, but has now agreed a deal with Sundowns.
The midfielder recently led the national under-20 side to success at the Cosafa U/20 Youth Championships. He also has experience of winning the 2025 U/20 Africa Cup of Nations and representing his country at the 2025 U/20 FIFA World Cup.
His arrival further strengthens a Sundowns midfield that already includes Teboho Mokoena, Marcelo Allende, Bathusi Aubaas, Sphelele Mkhulise, Nuno Santos, Thabo Cele and Gomolemo Kekana.
However, the depth in that area means Maku faces a significant challenge to establish himself in the team. He struggled to secure regular playing time during his spell at Siwelele FC and will need to work hard to earn a place in Sundowns’ matchday squad.
