Wydad AC consider Nasreddine Nabi’s reappointment as Paulo Sérgio’s sack looms
Wydad Athletic Club are considering a move for Nasreddine Nabi as they search for a new head coach following their decision to part ways with Paulo Sérgio.
The Moroccan giants are in discussions with Nabi over a potential return to the Botola Pro, just months after the Tunisian left fierce rivals Raja Athletic Club.
Wydad have endured a disappointing start to the league season, collecting five points from their opening four matches to sit ninth in the standings.
The club have now moved to end their association with Sérgio, with talks ongoing to finalise the terms of his departure.
Nabi has emerged as one of the candidates being considered to take charge as Wydad seek to turn their season around.
However, he is not the only name under consideration, with Alexandre Santos and Michel also linked with the vacant position.
Portuguese coach Santos guided ASFAR Rabat to the CAF Champions League final last season but recently joined Portuguese side Nacional. His appointment at the Liga Portugal club could complicate any potential move to Wydad after just four matches in charge.
Spanish coach Michel is also reportedly in the frame as Wydad look to make a swift appointment.
The club are keen to restore their competitiveness, with another season without a serious challenge for the league title or qualification for the CAF Champions League likely to be viewed as a major setback.
Nabi spent a brief spell at Raja, overseeing seven matches before resigning. He cited interference from the club’s new sporting director as the reason for his departure.
The Tunisian has since been linked with several coaching positions across North Africa.
A move to Wydad could offer him an opportunity to return to Moroccan football, where he previously coached ASFAR Rabat before taking charge of South African club Kaizer Chiefs.
Wydad must now decide on their next appointment as they seek greater consistency and a stronger position in the domestic league.
