Reports have confirmed that former Senegal coach Aliou Cissé is a leading candidate to become the next head coach of the Mauritania national football team. This comes after the Mauritanian Football Federation (FMF) officially parted ways with Amir Abdou, the Comoros coach, following the team’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
On November 22, the FMF president, Ahmed Yahya, announced the mutual agreement to end Abdou’s tenure as head coach.
The decision followed a disappointing qualification campaign that saw Mauritania, known as the Mourabitounes, eliminated from contention for the prestigious continental tournament.
The potential appointment of Aliou Cissé to the Mauritanian job has generated considerable attention, particularly as the Senegalese coach has been highly regarded for his successes with the Senegal national team.
According to African journalist Micky Jnr, Cissé is now being considered to lead Mauritania through its next chapter.
Should this move be confirmed, it would mark a new and significant phase in Cissé’s managerial career.
Cissé, who made history with Senegal, is perhaps best known for his remarkable achievements with the Lions of Teranga.
He steered the team to the final of the 2019 AFCON, where they narrowly lost to Algeria.
However, it was in 2022 that Cissé truly cemented his legacy, guiding Senegal to their first-ever continental title.
The victory came after a dramatic penalty shootout win against Egypt in the final, held in Cameroon.
Cissé’s tactical acumen, leadership, and ability to inspire teams have made him one of Africa’s most respected coaches.
Should he take on the role with Mauritania, he will face the challenge of revitalizing the national team and pushing them back into contention for future international tournaments.
The appointment of Cissé would be seen as a bold move by the Mauritanian Federation as they look to build a more competitive squad in the years to come.
His experience at the highest level of African football and his success with Senegal would make him an ideal candidate to lead the Mourabitounes forward.
