Al Ahly and Al Jazira win as Arab Women’s Clubs Championship reaches decisive stage

Al Ahly and Al Jazira both claimed victories in the penultimate round of the Arab Women’s Clubs Championship, with the competition now set for its final ranking matches before Saturday’s final.

Al Jazira defeated Sharjah from the United Arab Emirates 94-88, recovering from their loss to Al Fatah of Kuwait on the previous day. The result strengthened their position in the standings as the tournament moves towards its conclusion.

Al Ahly also secured a win and moved into second place, behind Sporting Club, who remain top with a perfect record. Sporting did not play on Thursday, having been given a rest day in the schedule.

The 27th edition of the Arab Women’s Clubs Championship is being hosted by Sporting Club and will continue until 12 September. The tournament features three Egyptian teams: Sporting, Al Ahly and Al Jazira.

The competition format means the two highest-placed teams at the end of the ranking phase will qualify for the final. The teams finishing third and fourth will instead contest the bronze-medal match.

Final ranking matches

The ranking phase will conclude on Friday evening, when Al Ahly face Al Qurain at 14:30 local time. Sporting will play Al Fatah in the other scheduled match.

Those games will determine the final positions before the medal matches. With Sporting already leading the table and Al Ahly currently second, the remaining results will decide the finalists and the teams competing for bronze.

The championship final will be played on Saturday, bringing the 27th edition of the tournament to a close at Sporting Club.
