AFCON 2015: CAF to Honour Late Tunisian Official Slim Aloulou with Minute of Silence
Malabo, Equatorial Guinea — The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced that a minute’s silence will be observed before all first-round matches at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations to honour the late Slim Aloulou, a respected Tunisian football administrator and former member of both CAF and FIFA’s executive committees.
Aloulou, who passed away on Wednesday, held prominent roles in African and international football governance for more than two decades. He served on the CAF Executive Committee during two separate terms (1988–1996 and 2000–2004), and was also a member of the FIFA Executive Committee from 1988 to 2004. At the national level, he presided over the Tunisian Football Federation (FTF) in two stints, from 1976 to 1980 and again from 1986 to 1989.
In a statement published on CAF’s official website, the organisation confirmed that a minute of silence will be observed “before all matches of the first day in each group of the 2015 edition” as a tribute to Aloulou’s legacy in the game.
CAF President Issa Hayatou paid a personal tribute to his former colleague: “He was a long-time companion. He joined the Executive Committee the year I was elected president. He was an affable, discreet, and rigorous man.”
Aloulou’s contributions to African football are widely acknowledged, with many remembering him for his professionalism, integrity, and dedication to the sport across the continent and beyond.
