Mourinho backs Vinicius Junior to fight back as Real Madrid place faith in Brazil forward
Vinicius Junior is no longer guaranteed a place in Real Madrid’s starting XI, but Jose Mourinho and the club remain committed to helping him rediscover his best form.
According to AS journalist Jose Felix Diaz, Vinicius is fully aware that he has lost his automatic place in the team. It is an unfamiliar position for a player who has regularly thrilled the Santiago Bernabeu crowd with individual brilliance and decisive performances.
His recent displays have been less convincing than supporters have come to expect, prompting a rethink of Real Madrid’s attacking options. However, his omission from the starting line-up should not be interpreted as Mourinho abandoning him.
AS reported that Vinicius “knows perfectly well that he has lost his place in the starting XI and understands that he is no longer exempt from competition. But if there is one thing he has felt in recent days, it is the absolute respect and support of Jose Mourinho and the club”.
Mourinho is not seeking to shield the Brazil forward from competition or guarantee him a starting role. Instead, the manager wants to help him recover the form that once made him one of the most dangerous players in world football.
The approach is markedly different from the difficulties and misunderstandings that affected Vinicius’ previous relationship with Xabi Alonso. Communication between Vinicius and Mourinho is now said to be excellent, with their conversations described as frank both privately and in the Portuguese manager’s public comments.
Real Madrid’s coaching staff are fully committed to bringing back the explosive, influential player who could beat defenders, change the course of matches and apply sustained pressure to opposing defences. Vinicius, for his part, is working hard to change his current situation and regain those qualities.
The club also has reason for confidence because of the long-term commitment reflected in his contract. Vinicius extended his deal last summer until 30 June 2032, underlining Real Madrid’s belief in his future despite his current difficulties.
His numbers this season, however, are well below his usual standard. He has played 12 matches, scoring one goal and providing three assists. That return is considered insufficient for a player of his standing, even allowing for the effect of his suspension from La Liga on his campaign.
Real Madrid have no desire to rush the process. The club knows what Vinicius can produce when he is at his best, but now expects him to demonstrate that level again.
With his recent performances and the emergence of Yan Diomande, Vinicius’ place in the starting line-up is no longer assured. It has become something he must earn again, although Mourinho is not expected to allow him to leave.
The schedule listed alongside the report includes Tavernes de la Valldigna in the Copa del Rey on 10 November 2026, and fixtures involving Valencia, Real Madrid and Celta Vigo in La Liga on 21 November 2026.
