Unai Emery says he is discussing a new contract with Aston Villa as he looks to continue developing the club’s long-term project.
Villa confirmed on Wednesday that talks had begun over plans extending beyond 2029, when the manager’s current agreement expires. Emery said he had since held a positive meeting with chairman Nassef Sawiris, with further discussions planned for next week.
“My ambition is to keep our consistency and how we are improving and building lots of things positively. It is a huge challenge,” Emery told reporters.
The Spaniard believes Villa have made substantial progress during his time in charge and wants to preserve that momentum through further investment in both the squad and the club’s infrastructure.
One example of that ambition is the planned redevelopment of Villa Park, including a new stand that will increase the stadium’s capacity.
Emery also pointed to Villa’s improved financial position. Increased income from European football and player sales has given the club greater scope to invest in young players, he said.
“I had a good meeting with Nassef Sawiris, very good meeting, very positive. Let’s talk next week, trying to get everything we spoke about together,” Emery added.
“We were speaking about how we can set our project stronger with a deal, yes.”
Emery focused on Villa project
Emery’s future has attracted attention because of reported interest from Manchester United and other clubs. However, his involvement in discussions about Aston Villa’s longer-term plans indicates he remains committed to the project at Villa Park.
His immediate concern is Sunday’s Premier League fixture against United, with Villa aiming to extend their unbeaten league run to six matches.
The match at Old Trafford presents a significant challenge. Villa have lost their past six games at the stadium, while Emery acknowledged they have struggled there since he took charge.
“We did not win one match there in four years,” he said.
Although Manchester United have been inconsistent in the Premier League, Emery warned that they remain capable of posing a serious threat.
“They have not been consistent in the league, but they should recover it, but hopefully not against us.”
