Amorim criticises Milan’s ‘stupid mistakes’ in Europa League defeat by Ferencvaros

Milan manager Ruben Amorim said his side made “stupid mistakes” and lacked the preparation required for their 2-0 defeat by Ferencvaros in the Europa League.

The loss came only days after Milan’s emphatic victory over Inter in the Milan derby, highlighting the lack of consistency Amorim believes is affecting his team.

Milan were beaten by two goals in the fourth round of the Europa League’s league phase, with Ferencvaros taking full advantage of a poor first-half display from the Italian side.

“There is no explanation for the defeat by Ferencvaros,” Amorim told Sky Sport Italia. “There is nothing I can say, especially about what we produced in the first half.”

“I cannot remember us playing such a bad first half before. It was about ambition and concentration. We gave them chances, made stupid mistakes and were not ready to play.”

Amorim said Milan had failed to make the transition from the intensity of the derby to the demands of European competition.

“To perform at this level after beating Inter so convincingly is difficult to explain,” he said. “We were not ready to move from the atmosphere of the Milan derby to this competition.

“You cannot perform at this level when you are wearing the Milan shirt.”

The Portuguese manager also acknowledged that his team was not currently equipped to compete effectively on two fronts.

“We are not ready to compete in two competitions,” Amorim added. “We have to work on correcting our approach and the way we view football.

“There are no excuses tonight, and there is nothing I can say.”

Ferencvaros played with 10 men from the 77th minute after Youssef Bamedile was sent off, but Milan were unable to use their numerical advantage to change the result.

The victory moved Ferencvaros on to 12 points in the table, giving them a perfect record after four matches.

Milan remain on three points and sit 27th in the standings.
