Barcelona back on track as Lamine Yamal and Raphinha punish Aston Villa

Barcelona returned to winning ways in the Champions League with a 3-0 victory over Aston Villa at Camp Nou on Tuesday.

The win was Barcelona’s third in the league phase and moved them on to nine points, placing them second in the standings. Aston Villa remain on nine points but dropped to third after suffering their first defeat of the campaign.

Barcelona had lost their previous match 4-2 to Paris Saint-Germain, but responded with a controlled attacking performance in which their high pressing played a central role.

Lamine Yamal opened the scoring after seven minutes, before Raphinha struck twice in the second half to settle the contest. The Brazilian added Barcelona’s second in the 53rd minute and completed the scoring in the 65th.

Barcelona’s approach was shaped by head coach Hansi Flick, who instructed his side to press Aston Villa high up the pitch. That pressure repeatedly disrupted the visitors’ attempts to build attacks and led to a number of costly errors.

Yamal was particularly influential, causing persistent problems for Aston Villa and standing out as one of Barcelona’s most dangerous players. The Catalan side also created several clear opportunities to extend their advantage, but were unable to add to their three goals.

Despite being placed under sustained pressure, Aston Villa still posed a significant threat to Joan Garcia’s goal, especially before half-time. The English side created four clear chances during the opening 45 minutes, ensuring Barcelona could not afford to lose concentration.

Aston Villa arrived at Camp Nou having won their first three matches in the league phase. However, they struggled to cope with Barcelona’s intensity and were punished when mistakes gave the hosts opportunities to attack.

Barcelona’s victory places them level on points with Aston Villa, although they move above their opponents into second place. The result also provides a positive response to their defeat by Paris Saint-Germain in the previous round.

The result marked Barcelona’s third win in the competition, while Aston Villa’s run of three successive victories came to an end.
