Bayern Munich claimed a valuable 2-0 victory at Atletico Madrid on Tuesday to strengthen their position in the Champions League league phase.
The German champions took all three points from the Metropolitano after goals from Lennart Karl and Konrad Laimer settled a match Bayern largely controlled.
Atletico defender Robin Le Normand handed Bayern the breakthrough nine minutes after half-time. Having received the ball inside his own penalty area, Le Normand delayed before either passing or clearing, allowing the young Karl to close him down and win possession.
Karl then finished from close range, taking advantage of an unexpected defensive error to put Bayern in front in the 54th minute.
The visitors doubled their lead in the 74th minute when Harry Kane found Laimer with an excellent pass. Laimer carried the ball into the area before unleashing a powerful shot which flew into the net and confirmed Bayern’s advantage.
Bayern appeared to have scored a third six minutes later, but the goal was ruled out following a video assistant referee review. The decision came after a foul by Dayot Upamecano, leaving the visitors with a two-goal win.
Bayern controlled possession and the tempo for much of the game, while Atletico looked to threaten on the counter-attack. However, the Spanish side struggled to create any clear danger for Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.
The result was particularly significant given Bayern’s recent absences. They were without Jamal Musiala, Luis Diaz, Serge Gnabry and Ismael Saibari in attack, while head coach Vincent Kompany was also ill.
Despite those setbacks, Bayern produced a strong performance to secure what the match report described as a deserved victory in the Spanish capital.
The win moved Bayern Munich to eight points and up to eighth place in the Champions League league-phase table. Atletico Madrid remain on four points and dropped to 22nd after suffering their second defeat in the competition.
