Bayern Munich moved 1-0 ahead against Atletico Madrid at the Metropolitano after taking advantage of a costly mistake by defender Robin Le Normand early in the second half.
The goal came in the 54th minute when Le Normand received the ball inside Atletico’s penalty area but was slow to decide whether to pass or clear it.
Bayern’s young forward Lennart Karl applied pressure, won possession from the defender and finished into the net to give the visitors the lead. The goal followed an unexpected defensive error from the Spanish side.
Atletico manager Diego Simeone reacted immediately, making three substitutions in an attempt to change the course of the match.
Le Normand was taken off after the mistake and replaced by Koke. Alexander Sorloth and Alex Baena also left the field, with Ademola Lookman and Lee Kang-in introduced.
Both teams began the match looking to improve their positions in the UEFA Champions League league phase. Bayern Munich were 15th in the standings before kick-off with five points from their opening three matches.
Atletico Madrid were 18th, one point behind Bayern, making the meeting at the Metropolitano an important opportunity for both sides to strengthen their position.
