FIFA asks FKF to call off Mariga-convened NEC meeting over constitutional concerns

FIFA has asked the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) to cancel a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for 4 November, saying the process used to convene it does not comply with the federation’s constitution.

The meeting was called by FKF vice-president McDonald Mariga, but the world governing body has questioned the validity of the procedure used to organise it.

In a letter addressed to FKF president Hussein Mohammed, FIFA senior governance manager Bruno Comicholi said the meeting did not meet the requirements outlined in Article 38 of the FKF constitution.

FIFA acknowledged receipt of correspondence dated 30 October concerning the planned meeting but said the documentation provided raised concerns about the validity of the original request used to convene it.

According to the letter, the notice issued on 27 October for the 4 November meeting was based on a request originally submitted on 26 May 2026.

However, FIFA noted that the FKF had already held an NEC meeting on 11 July following that request and subsequently issued notices for other committee meetings.

The governing body also pointed out that two of the original signatories to the May request had formally withdrawn their support.

FIFA argued that these developments meant the original request could no longer serve as a valid procedural basis for convening the November meeting.

“It would appear that the request of 26 May 2026 can no longer be relied upon as a valid procedural basis for convening the meeting of 4 November 2026,” the letter stated.

Comicholi further indicated that the conditions under which NEC members could independently convene a meeting under Article 38.2 of the FKF constitution had not been fulfilled.

Consequently, FIFA requested that the federation refrain from holding the scheduled meeting to ensure compliance with its constitution and safeguard the proper functioning of its statutory bodies.

The world governing body also stressed that all future NEC meetings must be convened in strict accordance with the relevant constitutional provisions, particularly Article 38.

The development comes just days before FKF’s Special General Meeting (SGM), scheduled for 7 November in Meru, and represents a setback for the faction led by Mariga amid ongoing tensions within the federation.
