Barcelona hand Fermin Lopez, Frenkie de Jong and Bryan Farinas starting roles against Deportivo Alaves
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has made sweeping changes to his starting line-up for Saturday’s La Liga meeting with Deportivo Alaves, following successive defeats by Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid.
The Catalan side are seeking a return to winning ways after losing 2-1 to their traditional rivals in their previous league match. Their latest selection includes an unfamiliar defensive line, with Frenkie de Jong named in central defence for his first start of the season.
De Jong has not been included in Barcelona’s starting XI since 22 February. He will partner Pau Cubarsi at centre-back, a position he previously occupied under Ronald Koeman and during his earlier spell with Ajax.
The Dutchman’s selection forms part of an emergency-looking back four, with Bryan Farinas and Joao Cancelo completing the defence. Farinas will make his first appearance for Barcelona’s senior team and starts at right-back.
Flick previously tested Farinas in that position during Barcelona’s preparations for the current season last summer.
There are also changes in midfield, where Fermin Lopez, Pedri and Rodri have been selected. The attack will be led by Lamine Yamal, Karim Adeyemi and Raphinha.
Barcelona’s starting line-up is:
Goalkeeper: Joan Garcia
Defenders: Pau Cubarsi, Frenkie de Jong, Bryan Farinas, Joao Cancelo
Midfielders: Fermin Lopez, Pedri, Rodri
Forwards: Lamine Yamal, Karim Adeyemi, Raphinha
