Mamelodi Sundowns take half-time lead against Durban City after Matuludi header

Mamelodi Sundowns lead Durban City 1-0 at half-time in their Betway Premiership meeting on Saturday evening.

The visitors started with the aim of returning to the top of the Betway Premiership table after reaching the quarter-finals of the Carling Knockout in midweek with victory over Marumo Gallants FC.

Durban City, meanwhile, were seeking a response after their defeat by Stellenbosch FC and hoping to give coach Eric Tinkler his first league victory.

Sundowns made the brighter opening and almost found a breakthrough when Cassius Mailula met a left-footed ball over the top from Aubrey Modiba with a quick shot inside the area. Durban City goalkeeper Frederic Asare was well placed to keep it out.

City gradually settled after that early pressure and came close to taking the lead against the run of play. Keletso Sifumba reached the right side and cut the ball back to the unmarked Ethan Brooks, but the midfielder sent his effort over the crossbar.

Sundowns continued to press and were rewarded 10 minutes before the interval. Marcelo Allende delivered an accurate corner into the area, where Thabang Matuludi rose to head beyond Asare and put the visitors in front.

The result would move Sundowns back to the top of the Betway Premiership table if they hold on to their advantage.
